Nibwaakaawin
Nibwaakaawin—meaning wisdom in Ojibwe—reflects Counsel’s tailored and client-focused approach to build effective, culturally-respectful engagement with First Nations and Indigenous peoples and communities. Led and delivered by experienced Indigenous practitioners with the support of our consultants, Counsel’s unique approach ensures that clients are empowered with strategic insight and practical training to further develop their understanding of First Nations and Indigenous rights, the evolving responsibilities of non-governmental entities to address these rights, and practical approaches to mitigate risk and build positive relationships.
How we can help.
Led by experienced Indigenous leaders and practitioners, Counsel delivers custom-tailored training sessions to empower senior leadership and staff with key insights, critical context and practical approaches for successful engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities. Informed by a session development meeting to better understand the priority issues and context, Counsel will assemble a training team based on the client’s individual needs. Training can be offered virtually or in-person, as a single session or training series. Each session is tailored to your needs, recorded, with the opportunity for additional “update” modules that can be integrated in the future to deal with changing client needs, local dynamics and the evolving understanding of Indigenous rights.
Our team of specialized advisors are available to lead, guide and support culturally-respectful engagement and facilitation with First Nations and Indigenous communities and organizations. We work closely with clients to ensure that the process is inclusive and culturally sensitive while remaining conscious of your key objectives. We moderate discussions and challenge participants to think boldly, question any preconceptions, and guide a respectful process. We encourage participants to explore creative, new directions and/or opportunities while ensuring everyone’s views are heard.
Through experienced Indigenous leaders and advisors, Counsel is able to provide organizations of all sizes and sectors with critical strategic insights for effective First Nations and Indigenous engagement, including relationship and risk management support. Indigenous people in Canada have unique, constitutionally-protected rights and governance structures. As recognition of these rights grows, corporations and organizations are expected to understand how to engage and negotiate with Indigenous peoples whose interests intersect with their work. Counsel is there to help guide you through each step of this evolving landscape.
